What is cosmetic acupuncture?
Cosmetic acupuncture is the use of ultra fine acupuncture needles to stimulate the points on the face and body that allow the face to take on more of its original shape of youth while activating the natural healing resources of the body to smooth and lift skin and muscles.
Facial rejuvenation acupuncture offers something very different from what conventional facial injectables such as neurotoxins and fillers offer: You. You still look like yourself. No duck lips. No frozen forehead. No wider face.
It also increases your health. Many patients notice fewer seasonal allergies, a much better mood, and a sparkle in their eyes that is the real essence of beauty.
What we’re trying to accomplish is using natural facial rejuvenation to solve the problems you see that you’d like to change: to soften deep wrinkles, eliminate fine lines, relax tight jaws that pull the face down, diminish brown spots, soften lip lines.
As far as what it feels like, it’s a lot more comfortable than you’d think. The needles we use are the absolute highest quality Japanese acupuncture needles money can buy… and quality buys comfort. Since we are needling the face, we use the thinnest gauges that would be used in children for the greatest effect and comfort. Most patients fall asleep and take what we like to call the “acu nap”.
We incorporate needles in the body as well as the face for a few reasons. One, we like the Qi to be anchored in the body to keep the head-to-toe flow going. Two, treating the “problem” area is great but acupuncture is all about the channels…the invisible system networking the entire body…that’s what creates the deep changes. Body points that access what we call the Extraordinary channels not only create physical changes, but emotional changes as well. And wrinkles and lines are just concretized repeated emotions stuck on the face.

What happens during a treatment?

There is an in-depth intake form (that I actually read!) so that I am prepared for your visit. We’ll discuss your skin, concerns, goals, and overall health.

You come in with clean skin, ideally. I have facial wipes if not. You’ve had at least a little snack within an hour or two of treatment so we have some Qi to work with. You’ll lie on the warmed table and we’ll place fine needles in body points and then begin on facial and ear points. Then you’ll rest under LED light (for either “wrinkles” or “acne”) for 15-20 minutes. After removing needles you’ll have gentle facial gua sha or gentle facial cupping (no marks from either of those. )

You’ll likely feel very relaxed. We’ll talk about what to expect and how to support your results at home. We may discuss herbal or Chinese Medicine dietary suggestions. This is not the time for a strenuous workout; it’s time to take it easy.

A lot more relaxing than you’d think. Most people fall asleep. We use the finest, thinnest Japanese acupuncture needles money can buy and that results in virtually painless insertion. We can apply arnica gel to the face beforehand as well. The LED light is very soothing and most people feel like they’re at the beach. In my many years of practice I’ve found that the people who were most apprehensive about it become the biggest fans!

FAQs
Does cosmetic acupuncture hurt?Surprisingly, not really. We use the best, finest Japanese needles that money can buy….and they are tiny and not inserted deeply, which results in a virtually painless insertion. For your comfort, we can also apply homeopathic arnica gel prior to treatment if you are concerned.
How many treatments will I need?This definitely depends on the condition of your health, age, the conditions you are experiencing, whether you are a smoker or not. It is safe to say that 10-12 treatments is the norm for most adults middle age and older.
When will I see results?You will see some subtle results right away. Lines get a bit plumped, discoloration a bit faded, etc. I’d say in my experience that people really turn a corner after their 6th treatment because we’ve built up so much momentum from regular treatments.

How long does a treatment take?I allow 90 minutes for each treatment though it could take less time than that depending on what we’re working on.
Can cosmetic acupuncture be combined with Microneedling?Yes and it’s a great way to accelerate the results of both those treatments! We do alternate them because the two techniques work so differently — we don’t want to nullify or block the results of one by doing them together.
Who is a good candidate for cosmetic facial acupuncture?Men and women who want to improve their skin and radiance in a natural looking way are the best candidates. Those who are committed to making any required lifestyle changes (free, everyday habits) get the best results.
